Frequently Asked Questions
What is wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing is a water sport where riders surf the wake of a specially equipped boat without being continuously towed. After getting up with a rope, you drop it and ride ropeless on the wave created by the boat. Compared with wakeboarding, wakesurfing takes place at much slower boat speeds and has no fixed bindings, making it an approachable choice for first-timers.
Is wakesurfing suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Most of our first-time riders are complete beginners with no previous board-sport experience. Dreamwake’s coaching system breaks the process down step-by-step, from your body position in the water to standing up, finding the wave and eventually riding ropeless. Most Dreamwake beginners are able to stand during their first session.
How long does it take to learn wakesurfing?
Most beginners can stand during their first Dreamwake session. Riding ropeless usually takes more practice because you’ll need to learn how to position yourself in the wave and control your speed without relying on the rope.
Progress varies by rider, but our focus is always the same: help you progress efficiently while keeping the experience safe and enjoyable.
Do i need to know how to swim in order to learn wakesurfing?
Basic water confidence is strongly recommended. All riders wear appropriately fitted life jackets and our coaches supervise the session closely. If you cannot swim or are uncomfortable in deep water, let us know before booking so our team can advise you.
Is wakesurfing suitable for children?
Absolutely, we highly encourage it! Wakesurfing is a great way for your child to try something new, build confidence, and have a blast overcoming a bit of fear along the way. They can either ride alone on the board, or have you ride with them. It’s also one of the best ways to bond with your kid – Coach Oliver can even guide you both through riding together and capturing those memories on the board, the kind you’ll look back on for years.
Is there an age limit for wakesurfing?
Not really, age is no barrier here. Our youngest rider went ropeless in just one session at 5 years old, and our oldest was 65! Wakesurfing is a safe watersport for a wide range of ages, so whether you’re bringing a little one or a grandparent, everyone’s welcome to give it a go.
What's the difference between wakesurfing, wakeboarding and wakefoiling?
Wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and wakefoiling are three fun ways to ride behind a boat, but they each feel very different. Wakesurfing is the easiest and safest to start with – you ride the boat’s wave like an ocean wave, with no bindings, and let go of the rope once you’re up. Many people share that it feels like snowboarding on the water. So if you love snowboarding, wakesurfing is YOUR way to enjoy snowboarding in Singapore to get yourself ready for snowboarding season!
Wakeboarding is faster. Your feet are strapped into a board, and you hold the rope the whole time while doing jumps and tricks. Wakefoiling is the most unique, using a wing under the board that lifts you above the water for a smooth, floating glide, though it takes more practice to master balance.
At Dreamwake Academy, we are able to cater to all three sports, and we specialise in wakesurfing.
What is the difference between surf-style and skim-style wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing generally has two main riding styles: surf-style and skim-style.
Surf-style boards are usually thicker, more buoyant and use larger fins. They feel closer to traditional surfing, with powerful carving, airs, snaps and surf-inspired tricks.
Skim-style boards are generally thinner, flatter and use smaller fins, making them looser on the water. If you get more advanced, you will slowly remove the fins. They’re designed for spins, shuvs, big spins and technical rotational tricks.
Neither is “better”, they offer very different riding experiences. Many beginners find surf-style more stable and forgiving, while riders who enjoy technical spins and skate-inspired tricks may gravitate towards skim-style.
Dreamwake teaches both surf-style and skim-style wakesurfing, and Coach Oliver competes and rides at an advanced level in both disciplines. We’ll recommend a board and style based on your riding level, goals and what feels most natural to you.
Should beginners learn surf-style or skim-style wakesurfing?
For most complete beginners, we usually recommend starting on a stable board that makes standing, controlling speed and finding the wave as easy as possible.
You don’t need to choose surf or skim before your first session. Our coaches can recommend the right board based on your weight, experience and goals.
Once you’re comfortable riding ropeless, you can try both styles and discover which one you prefer.
Where can I wakesurf in Singapore?
You can wakesurf with Dreamwake Academy at Marina Country Club in Punggol, Singapore.
Dreamwake offers wakesurfing for complete beginners through advanced and competition-level riders, with professionally maintained wakesurf boats, structured coaching and sessions available daily.
We also offer wakeboarding and wakefoiling.
How much does wakesurfing cost in Singapore?
Sessions with Dreamwake start from $160 per hour on our Axis T23 (that’s $180 for a one-off booking, or from $160 when you go with a package). Looking for something more advanced? Our Nautique G23 comes in at $250 per hour, paired with expert coaching from Coach Oliver. That $250 gets you time on the only Nautique G23 wakesurf boat in Singapore and coaching from Coach Oliver. Coach Oliver has maintained a 100% first-session stand-up rate among >1000 first-time riders coached since 2021.
So which boat should you pick? It really comes down to your riding level, how many are in your group, and whether you’re after a fun first ride or ready to push your progression further.
What is the best wakesurf school in Singapore?
The best school really depends on what matters most to you. We always tell people to compare things like coach quality, wave setup, boat condition, safety, actual time spent riding, and price – not just go by the boat’s name alone.
That said, here’s what we bring to the table at Dreamwake: the cleanest wake setup in Singapore, tuned for everyone from first-timers to competition-level riders. Our crew tunes ballast, weight distribution, speed and surf settings for the rider rather than relying solely on factory settings, and every session comes with life vests and coaches who keep their eyes on the water (not their phones) the whole time you’re riding.
Why choose Dreamwake for wakesurfing in Singapore?
Dreamwake is designed around one goal: helping you become a better rider while having a safe, genuinely fun experience.
For beginners, that means patient, structured coaching designed to help you stand up quickly and build confidence. For experienced riders, it means properly tuned waves, advanced trick coaching and access to premium wakesurf boats including the Nautique G23.
Across every session, we put particular emphasis on clean boats, proper maintenance, safety and coaching quality.
What wakesurf boats do Dreamwake use?
Dreamwake offers different boats depending on your budget and riding goals, including the Axis T23 from $160/hour and our premium Super Air Nautique G23 at $250/hour.
More important than simply owning a good wakesurf boat is knowing how to set it up. We tune ballast, weight distribution, speed and surf settings to create a clean wave with the right shape and push for the rider.
What is the Nautique G23 and why is it special?
The Super Air Nautique G23 is a premium wake boat purpose-built for high-performance wakesurfing and wakeboarding. It’s the boat of choice in wakesurf competitions worldwide, and a favourite among riders who are serious about learning the right way from day one, or who simply want the best gear available.
What sets the G23 apart is its ability to produce powerful, fully customisable surf waves along with top-tier wakeboard wakes, making it ideal for riders looking to push past recreational riding and really progress.
Dreamwake operates Singapore’s only Super Air Nautique G23 available for commercial wakesurf coaching, paired with our premium coaching experience for riders who want nothing but the best.
Does the boat really matter for wakesurfing?
Yes, but the boat is only half the equation. A good wakesurf wave depends on the boat’s hull and surf system plus ballast, weight distribution, speed and how the boat is set up for the individual rider. A poorly configured premium boat can produce a worse riding experience than a properly configured boat.
Dreamwake’s crew tunes the boat to create a clean wave with strong, usable push rather than simply relying on the factory settings.
Why does wakesurf wave quality matter?
A clean wakesurf wave with good push makes it easier to maintain speed, ride ropeless and progress into tricks.
Beginners benefit because they have a larger, more forgiving area to learn in. Advanced riders need consistency and push to practise manoeuvres such as 360s and airs.
That’s why Dreamwake treats wave setup as part of the coaching experience rather than simply turning on the boat’s surf system.
Who is Coach Oliver, and what makes Coach Oliver stand out?
Oliver is Dreamwake’s Head Coach and one of our most advanced wakesurf coaches. As an active rider himself, he doesn’t just coach from the boat – he can get on the water and show you exactly how it’s done. From your very first stand-up all the way through ropeless riding, 360s, airs, and advanced progression, Oliver’s got you covered.
He’s widely regarded as one of the top coaches around for teaching tricks, having trained riders to land more 360s than most, and he regularly works with competition-level athletes to unlock their greatest potential. As for beginners, his standup rate sits at 100%, so no matter your starting point, you’re in good hands.
Riders travel from all over the world to train with him — he’s become the go-to coach in Singapore for learning tricks, and ranks among the top riders in both wakesurf and wakeskim in Asia. His competition results speak for themselves: 1st place at the 2023 Asia Wakefest Open, 1st at the 2024 WWA Wake Open, and 1st again at the 2025 WWA Wake Open
Are your boats well maintained?
Yes, hygiene and boat condition matter a lot to us, so our boats are kept clean and well maintained for every session, not just for looks but because it’s part of how we do things properly.
Is Dreamwake good for beginners or advanced riders?
Both! Beginners can start completely from scratch with structured coaching, while intermediate and advanced riders can work on tricks and competition-level riding. Pricing ranges from our Axis T23 at $160/hour up to our premium Nautique G23, so there’s an option depending on your budget and goals.
Can Dreamwake teach advanced wakesurf tricks?
Yes. Dreamwake takes riders well past their first stand-up and ropeless riding into intermediate and advanced wakesurf progression.
Coaching is tailored to where you’re at. It might start with beginner moves like slides and spins, move into intermediate tricks like alley-oops, frontside 180s, airs, switch riding, and varials, and progress to advanced-level tricks like shuvs and gumbys. The furthest Oliver has taken a student on surf-style is a 360-shuv and gumby, while on wakeskim it’s 360 shuv, big spins, and switch big spins – the highest level he’s coached a student to, and a standard that goes beyond what other surf-style and skim-style coaches in Singapore offer.
On a personal level, Oliver consistently lands advanced tricks himself – frontside big spins and 540 shuvs on skim style, and 540 big spins, gumbys, and frontside shuv-ins on surf style. These are considered elite-level tricks by world standards.
Advanced sessions are built around refining technique, reading wave position, sharpening board control, and pinpointing exactly what’s holding you back from landing a move consistently.
Can Dreamwake train riders for wakesurf competitions?
Yes, Dreamwake trains riders for competitions across CWSA, IWWF, and WWA circuits. Our community has traveled to compete regionally in Bangkok, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and more.
The furthest a Dreamwake student has gone is 1st place in the Open Female category at Taiwan 2025. Other notable results include 2nd and 3rd place in Female Master Skim at Bangkok 2025, 2nd place in the Outlaw Female category at Taiwan 2025, and 2nd and 3rd place in Male Master Surf at Taiwan 2025.
How long is a typical wakesurfing session?
Our minimum session for 1 rider is 1 hour, and 2 hours for 2 – 4 riders.
This ensures every rider gets sufficient water time to practise and improve.
What is the maximum number of participants per session?
We cap sessions at 6 participants for a 2-hour booking. Smaller groups mean more riding time and better coaching attention, which helps maintain our high success rate.
Is there a weight limit for wakesurfing?
We provide life vests up to XXL and boards that support riders up to 140kg. If you are unsure, contact us and we will recommend the appropriate board size for you.
What equipment do I need to bring?
All you need is your swimming gear and our Board sizes range from 4’2 to 4’9, and life vest sizes range from XXS to XXL (30kg to 130kg). We provide the essential wakesurf board and lifejacket.
What wakesurf board should I use?
The right wakesurf board depends on your weight, riding level and whether you prefer surf-style or skim-style riding.
Beginners generally benefit from a board with more stability and enough volume to make finding the wave’s push easier. More experienced riders may choose smaller or more responsive boards depending on the tricks they want to learn.
Dreamwake carries multiple board sizes and both surf and skim options, and our coaches will match you to an appropriate board before you ride.
Can I bring my own wakesurf board, vest and equipment?
Yes, you may feel free to bring your own wakesurfing board and equipment, giving you the option to use your preferred gear.
Are pets allowed on board?
Yes, we do but do inform us before bringing your pet on board as we need to ensure that the following session has no students who are allergic to dogs/cats fur etc.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my wakesurf session?
A Reschedule of your session will be credited to you on the time remaining or your full session depending on the time of bad weather, guaranteeing a safe and enjoyable experience
